Text2 SepHIGH WINDS IN THE HIGHLANDS

Although sustainable energy production has become an increasingly common occurrence in the UK in recent years, high winds in Scotland last month demonstrated exactly how far the renewables industry has come.

A particularly blustery day saw wind speeds reaching 115mph in some areas, and gusts in excess of 60mph prevalent in several northern areas. As a result, the country’s wind turbines were able to power the equivalent of all of Scotland’s electricity needs for the whole day - the first time this has happened since energy agency, WeatherEnergy, began monitoring the data in 2015.

In total, 39,545 megawatt-hours (MWh) of electricity were generated for the National Grid and, with only 37,202 MWh being consumed across the country, the result was an energy surplus, with wind power responsible for generating 106% of Scotland’s electricity needs.

A Scottish government spokeswoman said: “Scotland’s abundant energy resources play a vital role in delivering security of electricity supply across the UK. Low-carbon technologies have a key role to play in our fight against the threat posed by climate change to our society and natural environment.”

At TrakRap, we are driven by a passion to provide sustainable solutions and lower our impact on the environment, and we’re delighted that Scotland feels the same. Through collaboration and green technologies and practices, we believe that a more environmentally-friendly future can still be attained.
