Interesting news from the capital this week, as the latest instalment in the ongoing feud between prominent UK chefs and environmentally unfriendly food and drink products took place, with several prominent figures calling on London mayor, Sadiq Khan, to ban polystyrene packaging.
The move comes after celebrity chef, Ed Baines, wrote to Khan to protest about ‘excessive packaging that is not biodegradable or recyclable’ in general, and polystyrene in particular. The letter was co-signed by several other high profile members of the food industry, including Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall.
A spokesperson for Mr Khan said that he “is extremely supportive of initiatives to help boost recycling and make London cleaner, and will be asking his new deputy mayor for environment to deliver a number of ambitious proposals that encourage better waste management and tackle pollution across the city.”
At TrakRap, we don’t believe that demonising any one packaging material is the answer. Historically, the main barrier to innovation in the packaging sector has been a refusal by the industry to collaborate and the polarisation of different packaging materials. Blind faith in one material is simply not the answer, which is why we’ve been developing ‘hybrid’ secondary packaging solutions which play to the strengths of certain materials, whilst reducing waste and using less material.
